On May 9, the Houthis launched a new military operation to capture remaining positions of the Saudi-led coalition in the district of al-Zahir in the central Yemeni province of al-Bayda.
The Yemeni group’s media wing released a 2-minute video showing Houthi fighters capturing a series of hilltops and roads leading to the coalition’s positions. The fighters were met with little to nonresistance from Saudi-backed Yemeni fighters.
This was the second attack on the remaining Saudi-led coalition positions in al-Zahir this week. Four days ago, many personnel of the coalition, including field commanders, were killed in a similar attack by the Houthis and their local allies.
Most of al-Bayda territory is controlled by the Houthis. The new operation in al-Zahir will likely widen the Yemen group’s control in the province, which is located less than 60km north of the southern coast. Most of the coalition’s bases and headquarters are stationed there.
