Catalonia To Start National Strike Over Police Violence During Sunday Referendum

Pro-independence groups and trade unions in Catalonia have called for a strike for October 3, as reported by Reuters.

“On October 3, there will be a national strike, a general strike,” the head of Omnium Cultural, a pro-independence organization, Jordi Cuixart, said, addressing a rally in Plaza Catalunya in the center of Barcelona.

Dozens of Catalan labour unions and other organizations are going to support Cuixart “due to violation of rights and freedoms”. Amongst them the largest Spanish labour unions UGT and CCOO, ANC and 41 other organizations.

The head of ANC (Catalan National Assembly) Jordi Sànchez has appealed to the Catalan government to secede from Spain.

Vice President of Catalonia Oriol Junqueras stated, that Catalonian parliament would unilaterally arrive at the decision regarding Catalan’s independence, Lasexta reports. He said that the results of the referendum had brought Catalonia to the threshold of independence.

“The citizens of Catalonia have won a right to form a new republic,” said Junqueras.

Junqueras considers that Madrid’s “repressions” justify recognising the independence more than ever, hence “protecting” the choice of the people can only be achieved in Catalonia’s parliament.

The Catalan independence referendum took place on October 1. 90% of the 2.26 million Catalans who voted chose yes. The turnout was 42.3% despite Madrid actively trying to prevent the vote.  At least 844 people and 33 police were reported to have been hurt during the attempts to stop the vote by the police.
