On August 7, a powerful attack with indirect fire targeted a large base of the Turkish military located near the town of Kaljibrin in the northern countryside of Syria’s Aleppo.

The base was targeted with at least ten projectiles, which were fired from a nearby area that is jointly held by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Syrian government forces. Several Turkish service members were reportedly wounded or killed as the result of the attack. The base’s main ammunition depot also exploded.

The attack was likely carried out by the SDF in response to the August 6 Turkish drone strike on the town of al-Qamishli in the northern al-Hasakah countryside. The strike killed a commander of the group’s military discipline unit, Mazloum Saad Eddin Asaad, and three civilians, including two children.

This was the second such attack in less than 24 hours. On August 6, four Turkish soldiers and three Syrian militants were wounded when an indirect fire attack targeted a Turkish military base near the town of Inab in the northern Aleppo countryside.

The new attack will likely provoke a fierce response from Turkey, whose military has already began to shell SDF-held towns and villages in the northern Aleppo countryside.

Ankara could use the recent attacks on its bases in Syria as a pretext to launch a large-scale military operation in northern Syria against the SDF. The Turkish military and its proxies has been preparing to launch such an operation since May.
