On July 17, a Turkish military convoy came under attack while it was passing in Zilkan in the northern Iraqi province of Nineveh.
“An explosive device blew up this afternoon, targeting a convoy of Turkish military vehicles in the area of Zilkan, in the outskirts of the Bashiqa district mountains, wounding two Turkish soldiers and a member of the Kurdish Asayish force,” an Iraqi security source told the UAE-based al-Ain News.
According to the unnamed source, a number of Turkish military vehicles were also damaged as a result of the attack. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, yet.
The Turkish military, which has been combating the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in northern Iraq for many years now, maintains a large military camp in Zilkan. The camp was established six years ago.
In April, the Turkish military launched the joint Claw-Lightning and Claw-Thunderbolt operations against PKK cells in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region. According to Ankara claims, 142 fighters of the PKK have been killed, wounded or captured, so far.
The attack in Zilkan was most likely carried out by the PKK, which continues to launch attacks against Turkish forces in northern Iraq despite all recent operations.
