United States President Joe Biden said on April 12 that he expected an Iranian retaliatory attack on Israel “sooner [rather] than later.”
Speaking during a press conference, Biden implied this was based on classified information which he said he would not go into.
Asked by reporters about his message to Iran, Biden repeated the one he’d offered Tehran last October: “Don’t.”
“We are devoted to the defense of Israel. We will support Israel. We will help defend Israel and Iran will not succeed,” he said, emphasizing Washington’s commitment to defend Israel.
Israel has been bracing for an Iranian attack since the April 1 strike on the Iranian embassy in the Syrian capital, Damascus. Both Tehran and Damascus said that the strike, which killed 13 people, was carried out by Israel.
Seven Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) members were among the victims, including two senior commanders of the Quds Force, Brigadier Generals Mohammad Reza Zahedi and his deputy Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi.
On April 13, CNN reported that the U.S. was expecting that Iran will target multiple sites inside Israel and also in the region in the coming days,
The U.S. will help with interceptions of projectiles, a senior American administration official and a source familiar with the intelligence told the news network. The sources also said that Iran’s allies could also be involved in the attacks.
According to CNN, Iran has been seen moving drones and cruise missiles around, in an apparent sign that the attack could come from within Iran. One of the news network sources said that the U.S. observed Iran preparing as many as 100 cruise missiles.
An earlier report by CBS News said that the Iranian retaliatory attack on Israel could possibly include more than 100 drones and dozens.
Senior Israeli officials, including the Prime Minister and the Minister of Defense, have already warned Tehran that Iran will strike back.
From its side, Tahran reportedly warned the U.S. against intervening on the side of Israel. Washington will apparently ignore this warning. Any move by U.S. forces in the region in support of Israel will likely be met with a response from Iran and its allies in the so-called Axis of Resistance.
