Baghdad, Tehran Boost Military, Security Cooperation. Washington Is Concerned Over Growing Iranian Influence

Baghdad and Tehran have signed a new agreement aiming to boost military and defense cooperation as well as counter-terrorism efforts.

On Sunday, Iraqi Defense Minister Maj. Gen. Erfan al-Hiyali and his Iranian counterpart Brig. Gen. Hossein Dehqan signed the agreement which would allow “cooperation and sharing experiences in the fields of fight against terrorism and extremism, border security, training, logistics, technical and military supports,” according to Iranian IRNA news agency.

Al-Hiyali arrived Tehran on Saturday at the invitation of the Iranian authorities.

In July, US President Donald Trump voiced concern over the growing Iranian influence in conflicts in Syria, Yemen and Iraq and in the Middle East as well.

According to Trump, new threats were emerging from “rogue regimes like North Korea, Iran and Syria and the governments that finance and support them”.
