At least two people were killed late on June 27 when a series of Israeli strikes hit Syria’s southern region, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency.
“At around 11:40 p.m. [local time], the Israeli enemy carried out an aerial attack from the occupied Syrian Golan, targeting a number of positions in the southern region … killing two people and wounding a soldier,” a military official told the state-run agency, noting that the attack also caused some material losses.
The unnamed official also said that Syrian air defenses had shot down a number of incoming missiles, without giving further details.
The Israeli strikes reportedly targeted the Shiite town of Set Zaynab to the south of the Syrian capital, Damascus, where Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Lebanese Hezbollah are known to be present and active.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the strikes targeted the service center of Jihad al-Bina, a development organization affiliated with Hezbollah, and killed three people, including an elderly woman, with another 11 wounded.
The London-based pro-opposition monitoring group has regularly been accused of false reporting and inflating casualty numbers as well as inventing them wholesale.
In addition to the strikes that targeted Set Zaynab, blasts were heard near a radar site of the Syrian military in the town of Tall as Sahn in the eastern countryside of the al-Suwayda governorate.
Israel has significantly escalated its attacks on Syria since the outbreak of the war in the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip, targeting Syrian military sites as well as personnel of the IRGC, Hezbollah and other forces of the so-called Axis of Resistance.
Earlier this months, an IRGC advisor was killed in a series of Israeli strikes that hit the governorate of Aleppo in northern Syria.
War-torn Syria has for long refrained from responding to Israel’s repeated attacks in what appears to be an attempt to avoid a dangerous confrontation.
