On November 10 afternoon, Israeli strikes hit a multi-story residential building in the Shiite town of Set Zaynab to the south of the Syrian capital, Damascus, according to Syrian state TV.
Video footage posted to social networks revealed that the strikes destroyed the entire fourth floor of the building. Several nearby residential buildings and cars were also damaged. Nine people were killed and at least 19 others were wounded, according to preliminary information.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Lebanon’s Hezbollah and several allied Iraqi armed factions maintain a strong presence in Set Zaynab.
The town was targeted by Israel on multiple occasions in the past, most recently on November 4 when the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said it struck infrastructure and assets belonging to Hezbollah’s intelligence division there. No casualties were reported at the time.
The strikes Set Zaynab came less than 24 hours after an Israeli attack that targeted a radar site located on top of al-Masyah hill in the northeastern countryside of the Syrian governorate of al-Suwayda. The site was likely targeted to facilitate the strikes on the town.
Israel escalated its attacks on Syria after the outbreak of the war in the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip last October, targeting Syrian military sites as well as personnel of the IRGC, Hezbollah and other factions of the so-called Axis of Resistance.
After expanding operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon in September, the IDF said that it will work to prevent the supply of any weapons from Iran to Hezbollah through the Lebanese-Syrian border.
