On December 29, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) discovered two mass graves in the village of al-Wawi in the western Raqqa countryside after receiving information from the locals, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
The SANA said that the two mass graves included bodies of Syrian civilians and soldiers executed by ISIS when the area was under the terrorist group’s control.
“We received information from the locals that there were two mass graves near the village of Al-Wawi … We headed towards the two mass graves and found evidence that confirms the presence of bodies so we requested the help of the civil defense, which began to recover the bodies,” a SAA officer told SANA.
According to SANA, 115 bodies had been already recovered from one of the mass graves. The recovering the bodies from the other one is underway. Syrian pro-government activists reported that some of the bodies were identified as SAA soldiers.
The mass graves likely include the bodies of 350-700 SAA soldiers executed by ISIS on August 2014. The victims were captured by ISIS fighters during the battles for the Tabqah airbase and the 17 Division headquarters in Raqqa governorate.
