Another Suspected Houthi Attack Reported Near Yemen’s Aden

A ship’s captain reported hearing a loud bang and seeing a splash and smoke coming from the sea around 15 nautical miles southwest of the Yemeni port of Aden on April 25, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).

The maritime agency, which is a part of the Royal Navy, said in a warning notice that the crew and vessel were safe and military authorities were supporting it.

The Houthis (Ansar Allah) have not yet claimed responsibility for the incident. Despite this, the Yemeni group remains the main suspect.

The incident came just a day after the Houthis announced attacks on two United States ships in the Gulf of Aden and an Israeli ship in the Indian Ocean. The U.S. Central Command confirmed that the group fired an anti-ship ballistic missile at an American-crewed ship, but said that the missile was intercepted by an allied vessel.

Since last November, the Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have attacked dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the U.S. and the UK in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean in response to the Israeli war and siege on the Palestinian Gaza Strip.

The U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen since January, killing 37 people and wounding at least 30 others. The attempts to deter the group have however completely failed.

The Houthis will not likely cease their attacks until the Israeli war on Gaza is over and the siege imposed on the Strip is lifted.
