A 4th domestically-made Moudge-class frigate will enter service with the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy on June 14, according to a number of sources.
The frigate will be named “Dena”. In a statement last November, Iran’s Defense Minister, Brig. Gen. Amir Hatami revealed that the new frigate will have better capabilities and equipment than its predecessors.
Three Moudge-class frigates, Jamaran, Damavand and Sahand, are currently in service with Iran’s naval forces. The design of this class is based on the Alvand-class (Vosper Mk 5) light patrol frigates.
Moudge-class frigates can be deployed for a variety of missions, including surveillance in national territorial waters, early warning, anti-submarine warfare, surface-to-surface and surface-to-air warfare and amphibious operations.

The Moudge-class frigate has a length of 95 m, a beam of 11.1 m, a draught of 3.25 m, and a displacement of 1,500 tones. She is powered by two 10,000 hp engines and four 740 hp diesel generators. The frigate can reach a top speed of 30 knots. She has a crew of 140 people.
All frigates of this class are armed with Noor or Qader anti-ship missiles, the Mehrab anti-aircraft missile system as well as several gun systems.
Recently a Moudge-class frigate, Sahand, was a part of an Iranian naval force which reached the Atlantic Ocean. The force is now sailing towards Venezuela.
